The Plum Hill Story

Once upon a time, Vera “Beep” Klister had a dream to offer people her best breads and other homemade goods. She opened “Beep’s Back Door Oven” and began selling bakery at local farmer markets.  In the summer of 2004, Beep and her husband Dave purchased the historic property at 313 Dodge Street which has a record as a rooming house and most recently as a private residence.

Dave’s personal construction business, Klister Karpentry led the extensive remodeling project during which 53 tons of debris were taken to the landfill and 16,000 brick were removed, cleaned, and later placed on the original building and the additions. Many other artisans and friends contributed to the project.

The beautifully renovated building now houses a modern open-concept kitchen, radiant in-floor heat, restored wood flooring and doors, and leaded and stained glass windows. Plum-themed details are featured throughout in a variety of interpretations.  Due to its meticulous and artistic renovation, Plum Hill recently won the first place “Commercial Project Remodeling” award from NARI/Fox Cities Magazine.

Gather around the tables indoors or linger on the porch or patio in good weather and enjoy wholesome and tasty food, tantalizing breads and desserts, and gelato, a low-fat, intensely flavored frozen treat. Beverages include a full coffee bar, wine and beer by the glass and bottled drinks.  In addition to general seating, The Veracle Room on the main floor is available for your private events, business meetings, groups, and enrichment classes of all sorts.

Meander upstairs to find selections from local artists, one-of-a-kind usable and wearable art, as well as unique giftware and personal care products.  Also upstairs, visit the Plum Hill High School Art Gallery where the talents of young area artists are displayed.

Our dear Beep passed away in January of 2008 but her spirit is present in every aspect of Plum Hill, especially in the hospitality of the employees and customers and the unique atmosphere of the cafe.

In the words of Beep, “IT’S ALL GOOD” at Plum Hill!

Plum Hill is located in an historic building at 313 Dodge Street, Kaukauna.

The building underwent extensive remodeling and is now a showplace as well as a modern, efficient restaurant and gathering place.
